Immunotherapy for Allergies

Feel like your allergies are going nuts lately? you are not alone.

If you are watching the news, you will notice that allergies are on the rise. Food allergies, for example, increased by 50% in children between 1997 and 2011.

While there are several theories as to why this is, you are probably more interested in how to prevent them from interfering with your quality of life.

Immunotherapy is a technique to help prevent allergic responses by gradually getting your body used to allergens.

The first step is identifying your triggers through allergy testing. Then, through allergy shots or tablets, you slowly re-train your body to become used to allergens and control your allergic reaction. Over time, your symptoms will reduce in severity.

Allergy Shots

If you have severe allergies that cannot be controlled through medication or avoidance, we may recommend allergy shots. Each shot will have a small amount of your trigger. After getting the shot, you will stay in our office to monitor your reaction. In the beginning, you will need shots more frequently, but over the course of several months to a year, we will decrease the time between shots.

Some patients see improvement within a few months, and some patients can see symptoms go away altogether.

If you are preparing for allergy shots, avoid exercise before or after treatment and let us know if you are on any medications.
